What is the CAMS certification and is it worth it
The Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) is the most widely recognised professional certification in AML compliance. It is awarded by ACAMS — the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists — and held by compliance professionals across more than 180 countries.
What does CAMS cover
The CAMS exam covers four core areas: risks and methods of money laundering and terrorist financing; international AML/CFT standards based on FATF recommendations; compliance programme design and components; and conducting or supporting financial crime investigations. The exam is 120 multiple-choice questions, available in English and Arabic among other languages.
Is CAMS worth it?
For most compliance and KYC professionals, yes — with some nuance. CAMS adds the most value when you already have relevant work experience and want to formalise your knowledge, move into senior roles, or work in markets where CAMS is actively sought. Many job postings in GCC, UK, and US compliance markets list CAMS as preferred or required for mid-to-senior positions.
It is less valuable as a pure entry point if you have no compliance experience — hiring managers generally want to see relevant work history alongside the certification.
How hard is the exam
Most candidates report a pass rate of roughly 70–75% for first-time takers with adequate preparation. ACAMS recommends 40–60 hours of study. The exam tests genuine understanding — scenario-based questions require applying knowledge to real situations, not just memorisation.
What salary uplift can you expect
CAMS holders consistently earn more than non-certified peers at the same experience level. In GCC markets, CAMS often unlocks roles at senior analyst, manager, and MLRO level that are inaccessible without it. In the UK and US, it signals professional credibility that generalist compliance professionals cannot demonstrate as clearly.
Other certifications worth considering
- ICA (International Compliance Association) — Diploma in AML or Compliance; highly respected in UK and international markets
- CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) — complements CAMS well for financial crime investigation roles
- ACAMS Advanced Certifications — specialisations in financial crime investigation, retail banking, and fintech AML
If choosing between CAMS and ICA: CAMS has stronger global and GCC brand recognition. ICA is highly respected in UK and European markets and covers a broader compliance scope beyond AML.
