How AI mock interviews work

6 min read·By AGZIT Career Team

AI mock interview tools have changed how people prepare for job interviews. Instead of practising in front of a mirror or asking a friend to role-play, you can now get consistent, structured feedback on your actual responses — at any time, as many times as you want.

But what is actually happening inside an AI mock interview? How does it score you, and how useful is that score? This guide explains exactly how it works — and what to do with the results.

What happens during an AI mock interview

The process varies by platform, but a typical AI mock interview works like this:

  1. You set up your profile — role, specialisation, years of experience
  2. The AI generates interview questions based on your role and profile
  3. You record your answers as audio responses
  4. The audio is transcribed by a speech-to-text model
  5. The AI analyses the transcript and scores your response across multiple dimensions
  6. You receive a detailed scorecard with strengths, weaknesses, and specific coaching

How AI scores your interview responses

Good AI interview platforms do not give you a single vague score. They break your performance into specific competency dimensions — the same dimensions real interviewers assess, but made explicit and measurable.

AGZIT's mock interview scores across 10 dimensions:

Communication ClarityHow clearly and directly you express ideas
Answer StructureWhether you use a coherent framework like STAR
Role KnowledgeTechnical accuracy for your specific role
Domain ApplicationApplying knowledge to real scenarios
Problem SolvingLogic and reasoning under pressure
Confidence & PresenceTone, pace, and authority
Question HandlingHow you manage difficult or unexpected questions
Experience RelevanceConnecting your past to the question asked
Resume AlignmentConsistency between what you say and your CV
Depth & SpecificityDetail, examples, and concrete language

Why practising with AI gives you an edge

The biggest advantage of AI mock interviews is consistency. A friend or colleague giving feedback is useful but inconsistent — they may be too encouraging, miss specific weaknesses, or not know what a compliance or finance interviewer actually looks for.

AI scoring is consistent. Every time you answer a question, the same framework is applied. That consistency means you can track genuine improvement across sessions — your answer structure score in session 3 is directly comparable to session 1.

The most common feedback pattern: candidates score well on Role Knowledge but poorly on Answer Structure and Depth. They know the content but don't frame it in a way that lands.

What AI mock interviews can and cannot do

AI interviews are excellent for identifying patterns in your performance — the dimensions you consistently underperform on, the question types that trip you up, the habits in your language that weaken your delivery.

What they cannot replace: reading the room, building rapport, or the unpredictability of a real interviewer. Use AI practice as your preparation foundation, not your only preparation method.
